The roguelike genre gets a retro celebration
Tiny Rogues is a love letter to classic roguelike games. It keeps the genre's core gameplay while adding a new layer of action in retro aesthetics. Dust clouds get kicked up by your hero as they dash into battle.
Tiny Rogues mixes the gameplay of roguelike titles, such as For the King, with the intense action of bullet-hell games like Bullet Candy. The graphics may be simple, but the gameplay is relentlessly fast-paced, and the onslaught of enemies does not let up.
Arm your hero and enter the dungeon
Tiny Rogues begins with you choosing a class for your character (multiple options are available, each with pros and cons) and sending your hero into the dungeons to do battle. You will be able to use a selection of weapons to shoot bullet after bullet at the oncoming hordes of monsters.
Action gameplay, role-playing mechanics
The gameplay mechanics of Tiny Rogues are more sophisticated than a player might assume from the retro graphics. Your character has various statistics that govern their weapons and abilities: for example, the stamina stat commands your hero's dashing ability. Killing bosses and absorbing their souls will boost your character.
Between Heaven and Hell update
In the dynamic Between Heaven and Hell major early access expansion of the game Tiny Rogues, players are invited to explore fresh, uncharted territories beyond the mortal world. The gates after Death finally swing open, allowing brave adventurers to confront unparalleled challenges in realms unknown. Fearsome new landscapes await discovery, including the enigmatic Shadow Planes, the lofty High Heavens, and the infernal depths of the Burning Hells.
Here, players will engage in ferocious battles against five new final bosses, including the formidable reincarnation of Mega Death, “Primal Death.” Besides that, the expansion also introduces nine alternate floors, each with two unique boss variations, bringing a heightened sense of unpredictability to each run. Concurrently, clearing the new floors will unlock 17 new alternate classes. To maintain in-game balance, some existing classes have been reworked and optimized.
On the other hand, 500 equipment items have been added to the game. Among these are 150 fresh weapons, including several potent and distinctive legendary ones, bringing the game’s total weapon count to 400. Effects that complement traits, classes, and weapons have been infused into some items, as well, enabling the creation of the perfect build. Furthermore, bosses now also present a selection of items, allowing players to choose rewards that best suit their build.
The expansion also introduces a plethora of new traits, taking the total tally to over 100. While many favorite traits are retained, many have been updated and expanded upon, with a focus on creating enjoyable and powerful combinations. Meanwhile, companions, a new feature, add an extra dimension to the game. These versatile allies provide not only additional damage but also valuable stat bonuses.
Additionally, the expansion sees the introduction of Mastery EXP in place of souls. With each Mastery Level, players can allocate a perk from the meta perk tree, offering a spectrum of beneficial effects ranging from game-changing effects to small but potent stats. Finally, there are mini-games, new event rooms, tavern updates, a black market, weapon enchantments, rewards, and much more that are added to the game.
Stylish retro graphics
In terms of visuals, Tiny Rogues looks like an 8-bit firework display. The player characters are very basic, and the enemies are only marginally more detailed. The real emphasis is on the bullets and weapons that fill the screen, including swirling fireballs that leave curling flames in their wake.
Retro through and through
Tiny Rogue is designed for players who enjoy both the statistic-based mechanics of RPGs and the straightforward action of classic arcade titles. The game structure is very simple: you make your way through s series of rooms, each containing a different set of monsters, until you go up against the level's boss. Retro fans should appreciate it.
